Are luxury pools harder to maintain?

They do not have to be. Busy edges, hidden corners, and finishes chosen only for day-one photos are what create a second job. A quieter layout with honest circulation is easier to live with.

What should I ask a designer about upkeep?

Ask how debris moves, who services the equipment, whether the spa shares the system, and what the finish will look like after a Mid-Atlantic winter.

Does a simpler layout mean a less luxurious pool?

No. Luxury, for us, is the pool you still want in year ten. Quiet circulation, honest stone, and a spa you use in October look more expensive later than a busier pool that only photographed well on day one.
