How to Landscape Around a Pool or Spa

You are here: Home / Pools / How to Landscape Around a Pool or Spa

If you have an outdoor pool or spa, you may be looking for new ways to enhance the landscape around it. Here are a few how-to tips that can help beautify your space:

Landscape Around Your Pool

Balance your Pool Design with Strategic Framing

Just as a frame can improve the look of a beautiful piece of art, bordering your pool appropriately can take its appearance to the next level. Instead of framing your pool with a plain, simple lawn, consider bordering it with potted plants. You can choose wide variations of exotic foliage and vary the textures and locations of the pots to add color and interest to your pool area.

You can also strategically position lawn furnishings to help frame your water-based recreation space. Try to incorporate the colors of your pool walls and floor as well as those of adjacent stonework into the hues of your lawn furnishings for even more appeal.

Enhance your Pool with Reflective Imagery

Since your pool is filled with water, it offers a naturally reflective surface that will mirror adjacent landscaping. Thus, it’s important to choose picturesque plants of varying heights, widths and colors to create a beautiful reflection. To optimize the effect, be sure to plant your foliage as close as possible to the pool’s edge.

Incorporate Strategic Lighting

Lighting can be strategically placed to give an ethereal luminescence to your pool area and highlight focal points. When positioning your lights, angle them toward surrounding trees, intricate stonework, and potted foliage. At nighttime, the enhancements from the lighting will be particularly stunning.

Landscape Around Your Spa

Don’t Leave your Hot Tub Exposed

Instead of leaving your spa fully exposed, cover several sides using decorative walls, rails, and plants. Although you’ll still be able to see the functional stairway to the tub, the rest of the spa will be beautifully hidden from view.

Create an Outdoor Spa Room

You can separate your tub space by enclosing it in fiberglass. The enclosure can form a lovely grotto that is also low-maintenance.

Make your Spa a Focal Point

Consider surrounding your spa with eye-catching shrubs and flowers to create a focal point for your yard. Since little walk space is required between the foliage and your tub, your spa area can be transformed into a garden oasis.

Add a Sundeck to Increase Functionality

A great way to landscape the space around your spa is by adding a sundeck. After relaxing in your hot tub, you can lie out on your deck for a beautiful tan.
