What is on your fall lawn & landscape to-do list?
What can you do as a homeowner to maintain your fall lawn & landscape when your blooms and grass start to fade? The following tips should help you keep up an attractive and healthy yard throughout the upcoming fall months.
1. Get Rid of Dead Leaves
The one thing you cannot do is slack off on your maintenance efforts. That means getting out there and removing the dead leaves continuously piling up on your lawn. The dead leaves end up blocking much-needed sunlight from your grass and soil. Moisture also gets trapped beneath the leaves, which can lead to rot that can be fatal to the health of your lawn.
2. Keep Up Your Watering Efforts
Do not let the cooler weather fool you into thinking you no longer need to regularly water your lawn. Your grass still needs enough moisture to withstand any harsh winter weather. Continue running your sprinkler or irrigation system through October. You can back off some if you tend to get at least an inch of rain every week. Make sure you disconnect all your hoses and flush the irrigation system. Doing so keeps water from freezing in the spigots and pipes.
3. Continue Fertilizing Your Soil
Make sure you apply a slow-release fertilizer mix to your soil. The roots of your grass still need a nice shot of plant sugars to keep from freezing. Adding fertilizer also helps your lawn bounce back when spring rolls around.
4. Loosen Up Your Soil
It is a good idea to aerate or punch holes in, your lawn at least once every couple of years. Soil can become compacted and covered up by roots and debris. Aerating your lawn helps water, air, and nutrients reach the roots of your grass.
5. Put Down Lawn Seeds
Use the fall weather as an opportunity to put down plenty of grass seeds. Not only is the soil still warm, but the lower temperature means there is moisture available for nurturing. Make sure the seeds contact the soil. It does no good to spread a lot of seed around if it does not have the opportunity to germinate.
