When spring slides into summer, those delightful early shoots of color can give way to wild growth.
Maintaining your landscape in a healthy, well-groomed way, is as simple as following these four important tips.
Trimming is key to maintaining your landscape
Trees, shrubs, perennials, and the lawn, if properly irrigated, will quickly grow shaggy if not trimmed back. Trimming overgrowth not only tidies up the appearance of your garden, but it also helps the vegetation remain vibrant and resistant to fatigue. Be sure to trim back trees encroaching on the walls or roof of your house. Neither should you permit vines to get a grip on your walls and begin the process of breaking down the siding or bricks and mortar. If you can’t uproot stubborn vines, keep them cut to ground level all season.
Nourish
All growing things enjoy a good meal once in a while. Another key to maintaining your landscape is to make sure you feed flowers, trees, and shrubs at least twice during the summer season, although your lawn may need three feedings to perform at its peak capacity.
Mulch
Your cherished plants will have plenty of competition from weeds all summer. To save on weed control, try mulching instead. A good wood bark or shredded leaf mulch covers the ground between shrubs and around tree bases, slows moisture evaporation, and smothers out the weeds. Those which later gain a foothold will pull out with an easy tug as their roots will only attach to the mulch. Be sure to leave at least a six- to a twelve-inch open area around tree bases so the trunks do not become waterlogged.
